It takes a lot to surprise me, and finding out that Gary Vaynerchuk was also a keynote at the Katana 16 (Avnet + Cisco) conference with me was incredible. I was hired as a keynote in February for this event and didn’t find out Gary was speaking until a couple weeks prior to the event. I was so excited and honored.

The event was held at the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco, and my presentation on social selling was on Wednesday, and Gary’s presentation was Thursday. A resounding theme of this conference was the power of social media, and I was so humbled to be in the room with some fantastic marketers from all over the world and I came home feeling empowered.

On Thursday, I came to the conference hall early to get some 1:1 time with Gary, and he was everything I imagined and more. I immediately went on Snapchat (add me – lindseyboggs13) and snapped with Gary:

Entering my first year as a full-time entrepreneur, I shared with him my background, my passion, and my plans moving forward. He actually asked if I was the woman from the free throws with Shaquille O’Neal and I shouted “YES!” I couldn’t believe he knew who I was and I couldn’t have been more excited from that exchange. He signed my book and we took some more selfies — it is Gary Vee after all, selfies are a must!

As expected, Gary’s presentation was spot-on. He talked a lot about branding and how time arbitrage is very important.

Time arbitrage is very important. You want to sell your product to that business owner. They don’t have time to hear your shit. And this is something we have to quantify and understand. The way we do that is to have them come to us versus we going to them.

It’s incredibly true. The more you’re able to build your brand — your company’s or personal — the more likely people will come to you, versus you to them. He went on to say, “People spend too much time on tactics and sales DNA and don’t think about branding and marketing DNA.” That statement sums up my entire career this past year; had I not ridden my wave from LinkedIn’s Sales Connect conference last year, I would not be where I am today in my career. Don’t pass up opportunities to build your brand, and then market the hell out of them.

Gary went on to talk about technology and innovation. With how fast technology is changing, many people in the workplace can’t keep up (or choose not to), and it’s a fundamental thing that has to happen or your brand suffers and potentially dies.

” Technology and innovation doesn’t give a shit about you and me. The market is the market is the market.”

My favorite part of his presentation was the Q&A. There were some great questions that Gary took on, including his feedback on the LinkedIn acquisition from Microsoft. His opinion, here:

On my recent entrepreneurship, I asked him the best way to scale my business, and how he chooses partners. He noted that when he first started Vaynermedia with 5 people, he never promised himself to clients. He said, “To build something scalable you have to build an organization, and the quicker you can hire somebody and take one less trip and build your business, you’ll build something more scalable.” Definitely something to ponder.

Immediately after his presentation, I was part of a panel with other Cisco marketing executives and answered many questions from the audience. Sharing the stage with these fine marketers was another highlight of my week.

No matter where you are in your career, I highly advise you to follow Gary Vaynerchuk on Twitter as well as his YouTube channel. He’s affected my life positively and think there’s so much to learn from him. It was certainly a day I’ll never forget, and one that’s had a positive effect on my venture of becoming a recent entrepreneur.

As if my week couldn’t get better, I ended up being featured in Gary’s DailyVee Episode #53! So much greatness in one week, and appreciate everyone’s encouragement and for following my story on Snapchat!
